Narrative Directions
For those who prefer narrative directions, here are directions for
getting to Temple Emanuel from several well-known roads.
Route 95 (Route 128) from the North
Immediately past the exit for the Mass Pike on Route 95 south, take
the Route 30 exit (Exit 24). Then proceed eastward on
Commonwealth Avenue, following the directions below under
Commonwealth Avenue from the West.
You will go a little more than 4 miles on Commonwealth Avenue.
Route 95 (Route 128) from the South
The most straightforward route is as follows (a shorter route is
given later).
Take Route 95 north to the Route 30 exit. This is a triple exit
(Exits 23, 24, and 25), immediately after the Grove St exit
(Exit 22). The exit ramp serves the Mass Pike and Route 30 in
both directions. Follow the ramp until you see the exit for Route 30
east (Exit 24). Make a right turn at the top of the ramp onto
Commmonwealth Avenue and then follow the directions below under
Commonwealth Avenue from the West.
You will go a little more than 4 miles on Commonwealth Avenue.
For a shorter route, take Route 95 north to the Route 16 exit
(Exit 21). At the top of the ramp turn right onto Route 16 east.
After 1 mile you will come to the broad intersection with
Commonwealth Avenue, with a fire station on the near right corner.
Turn right onto Commonwealth Avenue and follow the directions below
under
Commonwealth Avenue from the West.
You will go 2.5 miles on Commonwealth Avenue.
Commonwealth Avenue from the West
Travel east (toward Boston) on Commonwealth Avenue. You will pass
Newton City Hall. Go through the light at Walnut Street, and continue
on Commonwealth Avenue to the next traffic light, which is at Centre
Street. Turn left onto Center Street. [There are some shops on the
right in the block on Commonwealth after the Centre Street light, so
if you reach those shops, you've gone too far. In that case, take a
left onto Irving Street. Temple Emanuel will be in front of you at the
end of this street.]
After taking the left onto Centre Street, proceed to the first
traffic light. This is Ward Street. Take a right. After you pass three
streets on the left,Temple Emanuel will be on the left.
Commonwealth Avenue from the East
Travel west (away from Boston) on Commonwealth Avenue. After you
pass Boston College on the left, continue to the traffic light at
Grant Avenue. This is the third light from the Boston College MBTA
terminus, counting the light at the terminus as number one. It is at
the bottom of Heartbreak Hill.
Continue on Commonwealth Avenue to the third street on the right,
just beyond a very small shopping area on the right. This is Irving
Street. Turn right. Temple Emanuel will be in front of you at the end
of this street. You can park on Irving Street and walk to the Temple.
[Should you miss Irving Street and reach Centre Street at the next
traffic light, turn right onto Centre Street and then right at the
next light, Ward Street. See the directions in the previous
section.]
Massachusetts Turnpike from the West
Travel east on the Turnpike (toward Boston) past the Route 95
(Route 128) exit to the Watertown/Newton Corner exit
(Exit 17). Continue up the exit ramp and take the first right
onto Centre Street, at the traffic light.
Counting that traffic light as number one, proceed on Centre Street
to the 4th light. This is Ward Street. Take a left onto Ward. After
you pass three streets on the left, Temple Emanuel will be on the
left.
Massachusetts Turnpike from the East
Traveling east on the Turnpike (from Boston), take the
Watertown/Newton Corner exit (Exit 17). Proceed up the ramp and
continue straight across, parallel to the turnpike. After the
buildings on the left, the road splits. Take the left fork and follow
the road as it curves up over the Turnpike. Get into the right lane,
and follow the road until it is heading parallel to the Turnpike back
toward Boston. Take the right onto Centre Street, at the light.
Counting that traffic light as number one, proceed on Centre Street
to the 4th light. This is Ward Street. Take a left onto Ward. After
you pass three streets on the left, Temple Emanuel will be on the
left.
Route 9 from the West
Follow Route 9 east past Route 95 (Route 128). You will come to a
light at the top of a hill. Continue straight. Shortly after you pass
a gas station and then a Dunkin Donuts, take the exit to the right
(it's a very tight 180-degree turn, so take it slowly). Follow the
exit ramp back parallel to Route 9 until you come to Centre
Street. Take a right.
Continue on Centre Street for 1.6 miles until you come to the 5th
traffic light. [The 4th light is at Commonwealth Avenue, a broad
street with a small shopping area on the right.] The 5th light is Ward
Street. Turn right. After you pass three streets on the left, Temple
Emanuel will be on the left.
Route 9 from the East
Follow Route 9 west past the major shopping malls and some smaller
shopping areas. After descending a hill, take the long exit ramp for
Parker Street (which crosses on an overpass above Route 9). [If
you miss Parker Street, you can proceed to the Centre Street exit,
turn right onto Centre Street, and follow the appropriate part of the
directions under
Route 9 from the West.]
Proceed up the exit ramp and take a right onto Parker. Parker will
merge with Cypress Street, which joins it from the right, and then
merge with Centre Street, which joins it from the left just before the
traffic light at the intersection with Beacon Street. Continue on
Centre Street to the third light past Beacon Street. This is Ward
Street. Turn right. After you pass three streets on the left, Temple
Emanuel will be on the left.
Directions by MBTA
Take the MBTA Green Line D train (Riverside) to the Newton
Centre station. Leave the station in the direction of the
shops (northward, from the side of the outbound track).
Cross Union Street at the crosswalk in front of the station.
At the end of the crosswalk take the passageway between
shops that leads to Beacon Street. At Beacon Street turn
right. Just before Peets Coffee, cross Beacon and continue
straight along Sumner Street, walk down the right-hand side
of the street (Cold Stone Creamery on the right at the
corner). Continue straight along the pedestrian path when
traffic has to swing to the left. You will still be on
Sumner Street. Follow Sumner to Commonwealth Avenue and turn
right. Just past Chestnut Street on the right, after the pet
store, cross Commonwealth Avenue and proceed up Irving St
(Bodavi Bakery on the corner on the right). Temple Emanuel
will be directly in front of you at end of street. The total
distance is about 0.7 miles.
